Overview

Ship Recycling: Regulations & Training

India is a global leader in ship recycling, with Alang being one of the world’s largest ship-breaking yards. Despite notable improvements in working conditions over the years, the industry’s reputation continues to face challenges related to worker safety and environmental sustainability.
To address these challenges, the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (Hong Kong Convention or HKC) is expected to come into force soon. Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has already laid down strict guidelines for the certification of Ship Recycling Facilities and mandatory training requirements.

With stricter global regulations like the HKC and EU directives, India’s ship recycling sector is proactively raising safety standards through focused workforce training.

Priya Blue Industries Private Limited, a leading recycler in Alang, partnered with IRClass to deliver a tailored, on-site training programme, equipping employees with practical skills and greater awareness of industry risks and safe work practices. By addressing evolving regulatory demands, IRClass helps ship recyclers operate safely, sustainably, and in line with global standards.

Proven Impact Through Effective Training Delivery

A Success Story in Ship Recycling Safety Training

global-standard
The four-day programme was conducted onsite at Alang in Hindi during September/October 2016 by an expert team comprising a senior marine engineer and an HSE specialist. The training received excellent feedback, with active participation from workers and positive responses from Priya Blue Industries, leading to requests from other ship recyclers in Alang.
In November 2016, the same training was extended to employees of Hooghly Ship Breakers Limited, RLK Ship Breaking Private Limited, and Triveni Shipbreaking Company.
IRClass supports the ship recycling industry in raising safety and environmental standards per HKC and EU regulations. We collaborate with stakeholders to ensure compliance, promote best practices, and drive improvement in recycling operations.
